The Vrouw Maria and the St. Michel: two 18th century wrecks known as treasure ships, two unique glimpses into the Age of Enlightenment.
The exhibition "Spoil of Riches - Stories of the Vrouw Maria and the St. Michel" starts in Amsterdam. Both ships with their valuable cargo were en route to St. Petersburg, but both sank off the coast of Finland; the St. Michel in 1747 and the Vrouw Maria in 1771. The Vrouw Maria was carrying paintings acquired by Catherine the Great, while the cargo of the St. Michel comprised pocket watches, golden snuff boxes, a horse carriage intended for the Empress Elizabeth, and other luxury items.
The wrecks with their cargos reflect trading in the Baltic Sea area in the 18th century. In addition to luxury items, the cargos also contained commodities such as coffee, fish, tobacco, flower bulbs, cheese, dyes, and fabrics. What does this merchandise tell us? Why did it originate from Amsterdam and why was it being shipped to St. Petersburg? And what did a typical freighter of those days look like?
The exhibition "Spoil of Riches" portrays trading in the Baltic Sea area, the golden age of Holland, and the salons of the Age of Enlightenment through the items recovered from the wrecks, paintings borrowed from Dutch museums, and innovative installations. The underwater world also comes to life: A 3D simulation describing the Vrouw Maria in its submerged scenery renders the distant wreck accessible by all!
The exhibition also sheds light on the events after the finding of the wrecks and endeavours to explain why these wrecks arouse such great feelings.
The exhibition will be presented from 25.4 to 2.12.2012 at the Maritime Museum of Finland located in the grand Maritime Centre Vellamo in Kotka.

De locale mentaliteit van pre-internet Finland vs pop-iconen uit het grote Amerika staat centraal. Naast hun roots delen ze een gemeenschappelijke visie op de wereld en op kunst: Het is bloedserieus en tegelijkertijd extreem levendig. Deze visie verbeelden zij elk op hun eigen manier.

Dit jaar vindt de bekende huizenbeurs van Finland plaats in Tampere.
De beurs bestaat uit een kleine wijk die recentelijk is opgeleverd. Mensen kunnen tegen betaling het terrein op en huizen bekijken. Sommige van deze huizen staan nog te koop, andere hebben al een eigenaar.

Next summer Kuhmo Chamber Music will run for two weeks, from July 15 to 28. As before, there will be up to five concerts a day. Some of the performers will be new, but very many of the familiar faces will be back. At least the Danel, Meta4 and Enesco are among the quartets that have promised to return. The Eric Ericson Chamber Choir and the legendary Kronos Quartet are also in the final phase of negotiations with the festival.
Mr Vladimir Mendelssohn, the festival’s Artistic Director, promises a few world and Finnish premieres as well as some unfamiliar gems from the Romantic and Impressionist repertoire. The festival ends with Haydn's monumental Creation - which is one of the overall themes for the year.
Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Debussy, Rachmaninov, de Falla, Skryabin, Golijov and many others will contribute music ranging from rites, invocations and shamanism to the Old Testament, Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, Buddhism and Sufi. In perfect artistic harmony.
In recent years it has also been the custom to perform opera at Kuhmo. Next summer this will be the popular Carmen in a version by Peter Brook, along with highlights from operas by Handel, Salieri and Mozart.
And a 20th century masterpiece, Astor Piazzolla’s Maria de Buenos Aires, is also on its way to being materialised and rescheduled at our audience’s and artists’ request.
The prices of the tickets will be from 6–37 euros. The programme will be announced and the tickets will be on sale in mid-January 2012.
